The Heart of the Matter
Legal insights on overcoming family trauma and rebuilding
By Elise Buie
Every action has a reaction. This is clear. But what we at Elise Buie Family Law are really after, especially in the context of divorce and estate planning, is the why. When we understand the why, much can happen:
- We can see the impact of our actions,
- We can plan our next steps with more confidence, and most importantly,
- We can learn how to regulate our own behavior, even when someone else is not regulating theirs, to become the lowest heart rate in the room (a true superpower!).
These whys are the reason I started my Psychology Today column, “The Heart of the Matter.” Not only is it a space where I can offer legal insights and the psychology that underlies them each month, but my column is also designed to be a jumping-off point for the conversations I have with clients and prospective clients each day. Clients like you who want to get to the heart of your legal matter and resolve it in a way that supports growth and positivity — for yourself and your family.
Our goal in everything we do at EBFLG is to guide our clients in preventing, curtailing, and overcoming the trauma that can arise from marriage or divorce, to emerge strong and capable, armed with the foundation and skills needed to rebuild a beautiful and productive life.
Our approach is holistic. It is tactical yet empathetic; logistical yet understanding. Most importantly, it is intentional. We live in pursuit of whys.
Your whys.
With these objectives in mind, every month on Psychology Today, I tackle topics on co-parenting, child-rearing, marriage, remarriage, domestic violence, the close relationship between estate planning and family law, and more. There’s little that’s not fair game: personal finance, college, and holidays that don’t look anything like those depicted in a Hallmark movie.
As a once-divorced mom of four who’s now happily remarried, I’ve lived through many of these experiences personally, and so have members of our EBFLG team. So, it should come as no surprise that these titles arise from real-world experience and the questions that make us wonder what happens next.
So, check out “The Heart of the Matter,” along with our other recommended reading, webinars, podcasts, press media, and video library for general guidance.
And, as always, if you have questions regarding your individual situation, we welcome you to contact us or schedule a convenient time to speak with one of our talented EBFLG team members.
